CAPE FEAR (WWAY) — When it comes discarding household items you no longer need, there’s an alternative that could increase the item’s lifespan.
You may have seen these collection bins located in different areas of the Cape Fear. These are textile collection bins, which take items like clothing, shoes, towels, sheets, and purses. Instead of donating clothes or simply throwing them out, these bins give people the option to recycle household items they no longer need.
The materials from the items are either sold off or broken down and used again for other products. Some of these bins are operated by Green Zone, which aims to help those with items they are not sure what to do with
“It’s also a really great option when you have a wide variety of stuff. We’ll get calls from people overwhelmed by how much stuff they have all the time. So, having a convenient bin is a really important way to give people access other than just having to put it all in the trash,” said Kristin Schillings, an employee with Green Zone.
Textile items can be re-used for items such as insulation and industrial wiping cloths.
